Self was born in the city of Okmulgee in Oklahoma, where his father was the girls' basketball coach at the nearby Morris High School. He was offered a basketball scholarship to play at Oklahoma State University. He earned the honor of being a letter-winner for the entire four seasons he played. He was awarded a degree by the Oklahoma State University awarded him the bachelor of business administration degree in 1985 along with a master in athletics administration diploma in the year 1989. Self was named the head basketball coach of Illinois at the end of June in 2000. Self's predecessor Lon Kruger was recently offered an offer with the NBA, as the Atlanta Hawks' head coach.
